I have the metal tubes by Bower which are really well built, but have the problem with severe vignetting at wide angle, and entails removing the outer tube which defeats the purpose of keeping a filter on. If you are planning to use it only to attach a macro flash, then the metal tubes are better than Canon's Plastic tubes.
This device is spring loaded and moves in and out as you zoom the lense from wide to tele and back. This allows you to keep the filter on at all times, including a lens cap, and get no vignetting at the wide angle end.
My only issue is that the threads are plastic, so removing and adding filters with metal threads will probably wear these down. Hence I'm only going to use it when I need a polarizer or when I need a protection filter and cap in a dusty environment. Leaving it on without a filter or lens cap makes no sense at all.
Since Canon designed it, I hope the extra spring load on the lens as it zooms does not cause premature failure of the zoom mechanism/gears, and that they will honor any issues related to this in the future.
