Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon WP-V3 Waterproof CaseCustomer Review: First impressions Summary: 4 Stars
I haven't had the housing underwater, yet, but offer the following suggestions to buyers (these are based on pairing the WP-V3 with a Canon HF-M400 vidcam):
1. Battery size - If you want extra recording time, be aware that the -827 size battery will not fit. Based on measurements, the -819 battery should fit, but I don't have one for an actual test.
2. The lens port does not come with a lens cap. While the glass (not plastic) should be pretty scratch-resistant, I suggest getting a 67mm lens cap (about $5) for protection.
3. It comes with 2 packages of silica dessicant to prevent fogging when in contact with cool water. You might as well order some more, especially if you'll be using it in a humid (i.e., tropical) climate. The size of packet supplied with the housing is 3gm, and multi-packs of this size are available for about $.50 per packet. It's left to the user to figure out where to put the packet so that it won't slide around to where it interferes with the lens or controls (some housings have compartments for dessicant - this doesn't).
4. The instructions have a picture of removing the O-ring seal beginning at the center of the hinge. The written instructions don't say that you have to begin there, but you do, as there is a notch for your finger. If you start elsewhere, you'll probably have to use methods (fingernail, etc) that could damage the seal.
The controls are sparse (after all, most control is via touch screen) but mostly adequate. It would have been nice to be able to review clips with the camera in the case while still in the water - you have to use the wireless remote to do this, and it's not waterproof. At least you can switch between underwater and surface video modes (with the camera in the housing) using a trick involving the zoom lever as explained in the camera manual.
Ergonomically, it seems well thought-out. Without the camera, it weighs almost 2 lbs. The on/off switch and zoom lever are well located, and the side protrusion (for the LCD) allows a convenient left-hand grip to steady the camera. It is obviously set up for a right-handed user, but all camera gear seems to be that way.
The remaining important issue is the visibility of the LCD underwater. The screen has brightness adjustment which can be accessed with the wireless remote, but I cannot figure out how to adjust the setting with the remote. Likewise, LCD backlighting is an option recommended for LCD visibility in bright light, but that, too, cannot be done with the camera in the housing So be prepared to experiment to find the best setting(s) for viewing the LCD underwater and set them up in advance.
Assuming that the LCD is clearly viewable underwater, the housing seems excllent. Uncertainty about LCD visibility is why I rated it 4 stars.
