Customer Review: A Great Underwater Housing for the Canon S90

After purchasing this Canon underwater housing six months ago, we were able to use it this month. We took a trip to the Southern Caribbean and used our Canon S90 along with this housing to snorkel in Bonaire and Aruba. As most of you know, the Canon S90 is a great point & shoot (P&S) camera especially on land. Team this camera with the underwater housing and the resulting pictures are amazing!
Our first P&S with underwater housing was a Nikon. My hubby used that for six years. Earlier this year I purchased the Canon S90 and the underwater housing as a replacement for the Nikon. This was a great decision and money well spent.
The underwater housing comes with a small tube of lubricant that is used on the included yellow rubber gasket, a long strap, a flat white plastic flash diffuser, and instruction book.
I already had a rubber snorkeling wrist strap that we used with the camera.
The yellow rubber gasket was already installed on the housing when I received it. So, I assume it's okay to keep it stored that way. I removed the rubber gasket from the housing and I used a small drop of lubricant on my finger and rubbed it gently over and around it. I then checked the rubber gasket for any small particles of lint or hair or dust. I reinstalled it in the housing and was ready to try the wet test in a bucket of water. I stuck a small piece of paper in the house and shut the housing close. I dropped the housing into the water and proceeded with pushing all the buttons. After 30 minutes of sitting in water, I took it out of the bucket and let it dry for several hours.
The housing passed my wet test. No leaks. We were ready for our trip.
I set the camera to underwater mode and placed it into the housing. I did some test pictures to see how the flash worked with the housing. There were shadows in the picture. I took the included flash diffuser (white flat plastic) and attached it to the housing. I took more test pictures and the diffuser worked. There were no shadows in the pictures. Another test passed.
This housing is a great investment and adds to the versatility of using the camera. The pictures came out clear. This Canon underwater housing has a tight seal once the housing is closed and locked shut. How do I know? It took me awhile to get it open.
On this same trip, I used my reliable waterproof Olympus Stylus 790SW P&S camera. I had a mishap with this camera where water leaked into the main battery/media compartment. I've had this camera for four years and this was the first time I experienced a leakage. Could there have been a grain of sand in the rubber seal? Could the rubber seal have been worn from use? I'm not sure. Now, I'm cautious about getting another waterproof P&S camera.
For avid photographers, I highly recommend getting a Canon P&S camera with an underwater housing. In the last six years, we have not experienced any leakage or problems with our old Nikon. We don't expect to have any with the new Canon. From experience, I trust using an underwater housing.
