Others have reviewed this camera technically and demonstrated its abilities. I chose the SX30is because it saves much of the weight and bulk of SLR cameras, doesn't have their maintenance problems, and giving up lens interchangeability is not much of a sacrifice to the everyday photographer. I win my share of contests and accolades.
What I particularly like:
1) The camera is great for chasing my grandchildren across a soccer field or in the yard. The 'back away' button lets me find them quickly if I lose the action.
2) The 35X lens lets me take candid pictures of them from far enough that they don't pay attention to the cameraman. It is a bit slow to focus at times but I'm learning strategies to get around that. It doesn't fire off thirty frames in rapid succession but does take a nice series among which one or two make me look like a competent photographer.
3) The flip screen is ESSENTIAL to my photography. I use it in several ways.
a) It allows me to get low -- on the ground, under, and inside -- to line up shots physically impossible with other cameras. Try to get a shot through the underside of a pansy petal backlit by the sun with a conventional on-camera screen!
b) I use it to steady the camera on long shots. With an on-camera screen I need to hold the camera in the air to shoot a bird in the tree tops. With the flip screen, I hold the camera down, braced by the neck strap, rotate the screen for viewing, and extend the lens. When I find the bird, I shoot with no shake or tremble.
c) I use it to see over the heads of the crowd and get the shot of the winning goal or parade queen they will miss for the jostling.
d) I use it in other ways but I'm not giving away ALL my techniques. Suffice to say this type screen is perfect.
4) I can switch from photos to movie at the touch of a button (the red one) without fiddling with the dial. Those grandchildren again...one minute they are sitting quietly playing and the next moment they are off at a run and I need to switch to follow the action.
5) 14.1 MP give me the latitude I need to 'fix' photos that are a bit off. I have excellent software for manipulating my photos. Masking off an 8X10 from a large format is MUCH easier. With the higher pixel count, I can correct my composition.
There are some things I don't like:
= Noisy lens movement messes with the sound recording.
= The on-camera effects like 'vivid color' are redundant for anyone with good software and I have found them rather useless
= The three buttons on the back and the lens release (firing) button are all as sensitive to touch as a cat in heat. This is not the camera for someone with fumble fingers.
= In AUTO mode, a spread of yellow, red, and orange autumn trees sent it into 'sunset' mode. I also find that direct comparisons between AUTO mode and Program mode strongly favor Program ('P') mode. I get improved textures, better contrast, more detail, and -- I think -- truer colors. The exact same scene taken in both modes seconds apart is consistently better in Program mode. Canon needs to work on this.
= I have had a problem with focus or lack of it. At macro and at full extension, the camera loses it sometimes. But I picked up the ice rind of a hoar frost on a leaf at 30 feet, filling the frame and getting no discernible distortion. Macro photography at 30'!
Some surprises:
* The lens can move while in movie mode.
* The dreaded 'purple fringe' reported in some technical reviews seems not to be a problem although it may be a sample-specific problem I escaped.
* The camera is a LOT lighter than I thought it would be. (The ounces reported in tech reviews don't reflect this well.)
* The screen is generous despite being a bit smaller than other manufacturers' offerings.
* The Canon software is good although I prefer my own.
Overall, if you are a pseudo-pro or professional photographer, go buy another lens for your SLR. If you want absolutely every feature, spend $1000+. For the 'high amateur', save big bucks. At about $400, this is the high-value one!
Description of Canon SX30IS 14.1MP Digital Camera w/ 35x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom & 2.7 Inch Wide LCD Super Bundle W/ 16 GB Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) Mem. Card, Hi-Speed SD USB 2.0 Card Reader, BP-7L 1150mah Batt Pack, DigPro Deluxe Case & MoreA PowerShot with an Extreme Zoom. The PowerShot SX30 IS has got you prepared for your next extreme photo opportunity. This point-and-shoot digital camera comes with a massive 35x Wide-Angle (24-840mm) Optical Zoom lens - a first for any PowerShot! It also comes with a 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD, 14.1 Megapixels, High Dynamic Range, Zoom Framing Assist and much more. Canon's first high-powered 35x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom (24-840mm) with Optical Image Stabilizer reduces camera shake to achieve amazing images whether you are up close or far away. The PowerShot SX30 IS is equipped with a 35x Optical Zoom lens with a focal length of 4.3 - 150.5mm (35mm equivalent: 24 - 40mm) that allows you to shoot any scene from wide-angle to telephoto. The camera uses a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) for high-speed, quiet, energy-efficient lens movement with precise control. Focal length is conveniently indicated on the lens barrel. The lens is optimized to fully exploit its zoom length and wide shooting angle in concert with the camera's high 14.1 Megapixel resolution. UD glass effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, while enhanced negative refractive power ensures that distortion at the wide-angle is also corrected. Further aberration is controlled with the inclusion of a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens and ultra-high refraction index lens. The SX30 IS is equipped with Canon's acclaimed Optical Image Stabilizer Technology that automatically detects and corrects camera shake - one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots. Even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you'll be proud to shoot and share. And Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer Technology is convenient to use. It functions perfectly with or without a flash. Improvements to Movie modes: Dynamic mode enables users to use the Optical Image Stabilizer while shooting video in the wide-angle setting, and the Optical Zoom is now available while shooting video. Dynamic IS all...
