I wanted a not-too-expensive home printer that featured automatic duplexing and a scanner. This was the least expensive that I could find; one year and several thousand printed sheets later, it's still working well. Granted, photo quality isn't very good, but it's not really a photo printer. I'm an academic, so I'm mostly concerned with the text print quality, which is more than acceptable. The scanner isn't really suitable for books, unfortunately, but works just fine for thin items.
In general, the design is much, much better in every way than that of the HPs that I've been cursed with in the past. The Mac software support is excellent. My next printer will definitely be another Canon.
Customer Review: great until you get the U150 error

I've been using this printer for about 4 months and i have to say i really loved it up until now. The features are great, especially for a home office (probably not recommended for an at home-business). Photos come out pretty good.
The only issue....
that Evil U150 Canon Error (google it, apparently i'm not the only one). Canon has added these little chips to each ink tank that are super sensitive. Some say it's Canon's way to prevent after market ink tanks from being inserted..others say they have a "Self-destructive" timer on it that break after x number of prints...i say Canon is genious because each time i get this stupid error, i trek over to the nearest Best Buy and buy a new 15-20$ ink tank even though the one in the printer is nearly full. I called tech support and they will send you a new one to fix the error..
So let me say, it was a GREAT printer up until the U150 error..it's a shame really..and the reason it's priced so low for all of its features it's because you end up spending the same price on the ink over a course of a year..

The printing quality of the MP610 is well-worth the ticket alone. However, with the inclusion of the scanner as well, this is a product that I can recommend to just about anyone.
