Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon PIXMA MG5220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-in-One (4502B017)Customer Review: High quality, low price - great combination! Summary: 5 Stars
We recently replaced all of the Mac computers in our house with 2010 models. Our previous photo inkjet, which had served us reasonably well for five years, is now incompatible with all of the new computers - a bummer, but I was not surprised (it was an HP Photosmart 7550, which I would grade with 3 stars) as the USB interface on that printer was always clunky. Enough about the old printer - on with the new. I don't write many reviews, so for me to take the time to write this you can guess I'm pretty happy with the product.
Thanks to very good pricing (Amazon pre-black friday sale), the printer was relatively inexpensive when I purchased it. I was able to set it up in about an hour.
The setup process was very straightforward. The included manual had step by step instructions that I followed to the letter. Normally I don't really read all the instructions for products, but this printer was complex enough that I thought it would be a good idea. One important difference in comparison to other printers I have installed is that you deal with the PRINTER first, then the software. The printer arrives covered in plastic wrap and red tape - you remove all of that to get started, including two hidden pieces of red tape you will probably find later when you install the print head.
Have a flashlight and helper or work under a bright light - the recesses of the printer are all black, and its quite difficult to see inside. In the process of installing the print head and print cartridges, follow the instructions carefully. The orange protective cap on the cartridges requires a little bit of torque to twist and remove - but they warn you not to grip too tightly. You will get a little bit of ink on your hands as you install the print cartridges. Have a waste can right there or at least a paper towel or something to prevent getting ink on your desk from the orange caps - its a tiny amount but it was my wife's desk, so you know you can never be too careful :) . There are five cartridges for this printer: a black ink tank, and then four smaller color cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow) for photo/color printing.
After all of the cartridges are in, you wait 5 minutes for cleaning, and then another 5 as you run the alignment sheet through. Now you are ready to connect to the computers.
By far, this was such an easy process for me to connect the printer. Of course, you have to have a wireless router installed and know the name of it and the password, but the interface on the printers LCD screen was actually quite clear. I did not connect on the first try, but it was my error as I didn't change the case of the password to lower case - look on the screen for which button to push to change case - it defaults as ALL CAPS, which you probably didn't use for your router password. Once I got the printer to talk to the router, then it was time to install the software.
I decided to install everything. I usually hate the interface software that comes with printers, and I can't say that this software is great or not because I only used it for a minute after installation. This process takes nearly 15 minutes, it seemed rather slow compared to installing other printer software. One step in the process that is a little unclear is "registering" the printer, then the scanner. I thought I would be off to the Canon website to fill in customer information, but this step was really installing the printer in the Mac's "print and fax" under system preferences. The step by step process in the manual is very clear. Follow it exactly, including when to skip over pages in the manual that don't apply to your computer! Once the the software installation was done, I opened up iphoto and printed a photo of the kids on the included 4x6 glossy photo paper that comes with the printer - without doing any tweaking, I got very good color matching, I was impressed - very favorably compares to store printing.
It was then off to the other computers in the house to install the software, which uses the same 10-15 minute process. Again, slow, but it worked flawlessly so I guess patience is a virtue.
I just installed this last evening, so I've only printed half a dozen documents so far on the printer, nearly all with no problems. I did have a little difficulty printing a pdf document, but when I opened up the expanded printer dialog box I was able to fix that.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the install process. Be realistic on the setup time that you will need, especially since you if you're buying this printer you're almost certainly going to use the wireless connection (why pay for it if you don't use it!). If you're purchasing this, you at least have 2 computers to connect, so budget the time to connect them and you'll be good to go. I'll report back in about a month with an update on print quality.
