This of course is the gigantic lens hood that protects two of Canon's most expensive lenses, made of the most expensive carbon fiber material you could ever want.
My 300mm f2.8 took a shot from a basketball. The lens was well protected by the hood of course but now it was crooked on the lens. I pulled the hood off and the small locking tab that holds the hood onto the lens fell out. It turns out that the tab is connected to a thin shaft of rather weak metal. For an expensive lens hood made of high-tech material, this was surprisingly weak construction especially since this is its only moving part.
