I opted for the more expensive canon hood for my beloved 50mm lens because it has the inner lining of black felt which should potentially reduce light reflection from the otherwise glossy plastic inner surface. But the main reason is because I am vain and superficial and must have the canon brand name on any accessory I purchase.
The hood has done its job in eliminating peripheral glare. It does not, though, lock snugly in place... with only a slight twisting pressure the hood will unlock from the lens and is then loose. This is potentially a major annoyance, but perhaps I got a bad bottle cap...err I mean lens hood. There is also a sliver of space between the base of the hood and where it twist-locks with the lens; this is likely only an aesthetic concern, though not expected from a brand name lens hood.
Finally, it's a minor challenge to fit the lens cap onto the camera with the hood in place... and I worry about going in at a bad angle and scratching my lens. Maybe canon will make a lens hood cap accessory with a nice 'canon' logo that I can pay twenty bucks for... or maybe it should have just been included with the hood.
