Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens + Deluxe Accessory KitCustomer Review: These accessories are actually pretty good! Summary: 4 Stars
With a bunch of accessories in this kit, I thought to myself that some of them have got to be of poor quality or none of them were really that good since the price, with the lens, is way less than the $300 MSRP of the lens in stores.
****ACCESSORIES****
The lens cleaning tool - very nice, it has a spray bottle at the end built in (which I had no clue of prior to purchasing).
The cloth is a cloth, nothing really to rant or rave about since it is a soft cloth and doesn't scratch the lens - so I guess you could say it works as advertised.
The lens leash cap - you get the exact one you see in the photo.
Lens filters - these are actually of a pretty nice build, very solid plastic (if not a combination of plastic and metal). I ended up putting two of these on the two lenses I have that can use them. You get a pouch that can hold the three filters and close with a metal clasp button.
The lens pouch is probably the only thing in this kit that's not as nice as the rest. It is slightly padded and can protect most lenses. The EF-S 55-250mm will poke out a little, but it's not bad if you have a padded bag to put this stuff in.
****EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6****
The lens itself is great - not really heavy but it definitely adds weight to the camera. I will probably have to slightly modify my holding of the camera when using this lens - also to get a steadier grip. The IS works fine, I don't know why a lot of people complain about it.
Now I'm not sure if it is the auto settings or the lens, but it seems like I had to rely MUCH MORE on manual settings to make colors not look as washed out when using one of the pre-sets that determines ISO/aperture/shutter speed/white balance for you. When I tweaked with the settings in manual mode, the colors popped out more and I could see objects when zoomed out with color better.
If that didn't make any sense, then hopefully this will. I took pictures of houses that are fairly far away from my front door. I would take a picture with the lens zoomed completely out and then another picture with the lens focused on one of the houses. When I had the lens zoomed out, I could barely make out the different brick colors on the houses (using a pre-set) but could see the brick colors (and lines and everything) on the house when zoomed in (again, using a pre-set mode).
On manual mode I could dial in the settings and actually see more color and detail in the houses when zoomed out. Zooming in the difference wasn't as stark.
I tended to use the manual focus more when I was zoomed in on a subject. AF still works fine and great when in the middle of the 55-250 range (at least in my opinion and experience with it so far).
Overall, for the price (under $300 WITH accessories) of this lens you can't go wrong with the EF-S 55-250mm if you need to get up close and personal. I have not extensively tried it in indoor lighting yet, but I did NOT notice a huge difference between this and the kit lens when zoomed in the low to mid range of the 55-250mm.
Of course there are always better lenses that you can pay MUCH more for, but if you're just an avid amateur photographer like me that just wants to take nice photos, why pay more? I haven't had any experience with anything other than my parents' Sigma 75-300mm (I think that's the range) but that lens is HUGE. And I haven't read really anything positive about ANY lenses (that aren't really expensive) with a huge range of 75-300mm. Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone!
Got my stuff within a fair amount of time considering I didn't spring for a lot of shipping. Would do business with again, if I ever recover from my mini-shopping spree for photography equipment before my trip.
Hope this helps anyone who's thinking about making the plunge. My last review apparently helped someone out!
Description of Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens + Deluxe Accessory KitIncorporating Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology, this Canon 55-250mm telephoto zoom lens captures long distance, low-light shots far better than many comparable lenses, helping you photograph the far-off action of athletes or zoom in for an intimate portrait with a blurred background. The high-zoom-ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses). More significantly, the image stabilizer effect creates an equivalent shutter speed of roughly four stops faster than the same size lens without an image stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you can hold a 250mm lens steadily is normally 1/250th of a second, this Canon lens will let you hand-hold shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. The lens also boasts a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration to create excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. Delivering an excellent performance at an affordable price for all photographers, the 55-250mm lens carries a one-year warranty. ++PLUS++ DELUXE ACCESSORY KIT: 3 pc Filter Kit: Includes: UV filter, Polarizing filter, Fluorescent correction filter & Filter case - Protective Lens Pouch with Drawstring Closure - Lens Pen Cleaning Tool - Elastic Front Lens Cap Leash (cap keeper) - Advanced Micro Fiber Cleaning Cloth.
