Customer Review: The Italian Sports Car of Lenses

The sticker shock was pretty rough for about a month after getting this lens (bought it new here on Amazon) but after a few hundred photos, I can say you get what you pay for. The Bokeh, color and contrast are outstanding, even better than my other "L" lenses (EF 24-105 F4 L, EF 100-400 F4.5-5.6 L, EF 16-35 f2.8 L). The IS works as expected, and even wide open I am getting sharp results corner-to-corner. Build quality is also as you would expect from an "L" lens; solid, smooth zoom ring with no play, good weather sealing.
I took this lens to the zoo and was even able to capture fast-moving animals on the indoor exhibits wide open and not have to go much past ISO 800. It is heavy, but then so is my camera (5D and 1Ds) and it wasn't much of a bother once I saw the results I was getting.
This is the lens I like to use the most for people and portraits and it does a great job. Well worth the money, especially if you look at it as an investment. Lenses like these won't soon loose their value.
